Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has condoled with the people of Iwo following Friday’s devastating flood disaster caused by several hours of heavy downpour.
He also pledged immediate and long-term measures to forestall future occurrences.
The governor, in a statement on Monday, described the scale of destruction as “monumental.”
He added that many residents suffered huge personal and economic losses as a result of the natural disaster.
“I am devastated to learn about the monumental damage caused by flooding that occurred in Iwo on Friday following hours of heavy downpour. The scale of the losses suffered by our people is especially heavy, and I can only imagine the toll on our people in Iwo,” Adeleke stated.
He assured residents that his administration had already commenced interventions to mitigate the situation, including the expansion of waterways across Iwo and adjoining communities.
He added that the state government would also take stock of damages and provide appropriate support to affected victims.
Before the incident, Adeleke noted that his administration had embarked on dredging projects, including the Aiba waterways, to ease water flow and curb flooding.
He disclosed that additional resources have now been mobilised to further channelise more waterways in the town.
The governor further directed the Commissioner for Environment to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of affected areas and recommend lasting solutions.
“As a government, we stand with the people of Iwo in this difficult moment, and assure them of our commitment to support them to overcome the challenges created by the incident,” he said.
Adeleke also appealed to residents of Iwo and Osun at large to support government efforts by avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse on water channels, stressing that community cooperation is crucial to tackling flooding in the state.
