These questions, among others, are crucial in uncovering the truth behind the incident that occurred around Capital Hotel yesterday, which has been shrouded in a fog of misinformation and political maneuvering.
The recent allegation of abuse of power and assault against the Osun State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun has sparked public discussion.
This unfortunate episode serves as a reminder that the rule of law is not just a set of abstract principles but a living, breathing entity that must be nurtured and protected if it is to thrive.
Unfortunately, people like Lamina Omotoyosi and his ilks without getting their facts from all sides put up a troubling narrative with their one-sided story they listened to.
In the world of law, honesty and integrity are paramount even though there will always be a few bad ones who will want to tarnish the reputation of the profession. One of such is Barrister Muhydeen Yusuf, with his deceitful tactics and manipulation of truth.
In light of the recent allegations against the Mr. Speaker, it is crucial that we separate facts from fiction and expose the truth behind the incident.
The facts, as they stand, are clear: Mr. Speaker responded to a distress call from concerned citizens to prevent the destruction of people’s properties.
There was no interaction between the Speaker and the lawyer, Muhydeen Yusuf. Furthermore, the lawyer’s allegation of being attacked is false, as he was, in fact, rescued from mob by a member of the Speaker’s security team.
In about ten to fifteen minutes of Mr. Speaker’s presence at the scene, he did not have any interaction (not even a salutation) with any civilian present there. He had a conversation with the Police Officer who led the team of detachment of police to the scene. He emphasized to the officer the importance of respecting the rights of individuals and businesses, stating that the action of destroying people’s properties without notice is not only illegal but also detrimental to the community as a whole.
It is pertinent I say that the Honourable Speaker is aware that the parcel of land in question belongs to the Osun State Government and was allocated to the occupants through the management of Technical School, Osogbo But, someone is laying the claim of the land via a judgement, which is claimed to have gotten about two years ago. I want to say that a proper filing of the stay of execution against the Judgement has been filed by the Minsitry of Land and Attorney General of the State.
After discussing with the officer and placing a call through to a senior police chief, the officer quietly withdrew his team. Meanwhile, immediately, the people noticed that the police were retreating. There was an attempt by them to attack Barr. Muhydeen Yusuf, whom they said, has been coordinating the destruction of the said properties.
One of the officers in mufti in the speaker’s entourage tried to provide safety for him from the mob and took him straight to their car, which Muhydeen Yusuf never objected to.
He sat alone in the car with the driver for about five minutes while Mr Speaker and his security personnel were still standing by the roadside waiting for the officers to take their exit.
It was surprising to read that the gesture of this officer to protect and rescue Muhydeen Yusuf from the mob being twisted in the media. This has exposed the darker side of our nation, where the truth is often manipulated and distorted for personal gain.
Notably, no court order was presented to Mr Speaker, nor did he engage with lawyers or any civilian at that scene.
I would like to ask Mr Muhydeen Yusuf a few sailent questions:
1. Why did he follow the officer in mufti to the backup vehicle of Mr Speaker without any objection to the gesture?
2. Why was Muhydeen comfortable to ride in Mr Speaker’s convoy out of the scene (those he claimed to have beaten or harassed)?
Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun has always been known for his unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law. He understands the importance of a fair and just legal system in maintaining a democratic society. He placed premium value on the critical role the legal professionals play in upholding the principle of justice and the rule of law.
It is a sad reality that we still have those who prioritise personal gain over ethical conduct.
It is incumbent upon us as citizens and members of a community to be mindful of the facts and to avoid jumping to conclusions based on hearsay or incomplete information.
We must remain steadfast in our commitment to the rule of law and the principles of justice while also acknowledging the complexities and nuances that can arise in matters of public controversy.
I want to re emphasise that Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun has great respect and regard for the Nigerian Bar Association and its members. The role the lawyers play in upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for all citizens is acknowledged by him. He is committed to working closely with the association and its members to promote a fair and just society for all Nigerians.
Be assured of his highest regards at all times.
Signed:
Olamide Tiamiyu,
Chief Press Secretary to the Honourable Speaker, Osun State House of Assembly.
