The Osun State Police Command has called on residents, particularly those involved in the scrap and waste recycling business, to exercise caution and maintain close cooperation with security operatives to prevent incidents involving explosive materials.

This appeal was made during an awareness and sensitisation session organised for members of the National Association of Scrap and Waste Dealers Employees of Nigeria (NASWDEN), Osun State Chapter.

The training was coordinated by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Unit of the command.

In a statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the exercise focused on equipping participants with the knowledge to identify and safely handle materials suspected to contain explosives.

Speaking at the event, the Commander of EOD Base 16, Osogbo, SP Godwin Ogigha, reaffirmed the Police Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property under the leadership of Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan.

“The safety of every resident remains our top priority. We urge everyone, especially those in the scrap business, to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious objects or movements to the nearest police station,” Ogigha stated.

Participants at the training were taken through practical demonstrations and interactive discussions on the safe handling and disposal of explosive ordnance.

They were also educated on the dangers of mishandling unidentified metallic objects and advised to observe strict safety measures while carrying out their daily operations.

Leaders of NASWDEN expressed appreciation to the police for the initiative and promised to collaborate more closely with security agencies to maintain public safety in the state.

The sensitisation campaign is part of the Osun State Police Command’s continuous drive to promote community engagement and prevent accidents or security threats associated with explosive materials.

DSP Ojelabi further assured that the command would sustain such awareness programmes across the state in partnership with relevant organisations and community groups.
