Adeleke Celebrates Dele Momodu at 66, Calls for End to Xenophobia

By Waliu Adetokun, Osogbo

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has celebrated the 66th birthday of veteran journalist and publisher Dele Momodu, describing him as his “twin brother” during a colourful event attended by dignitaries, family members, and associates.

The event, organised by the Dele Momodu Foundation, was held under the theme, “Ignorance and the Danger of Xenophobia,” with participants expressing concern over rising xenophobic attacks against Africans, especially Nigerians living in South Africa.

Speaking at the occasion, Governor Adeleke praised Momodu for his outstanding contributions to journalism, publishing, and nation building, describing him as a respected voice for African unity and development.

The governor said the founder of Ovation International has continued to promote the image of Africa through journalism and public engagement.

In a light-hearted moment that drew applause from guests, Adeleke referred to the media entrepreneur as his “twin brother,” reflecting the close relationship between both men.

Addressing the theme of the event, the governor condemned xenophobic attacks against Nigerians abroad and called on African leaders to take decisive steps to end such hostilities.
“Xenophobia is a cancer that eats away at the fabric of our shared humanity,” Adeleke said.

“The attacks on our citizens in South Africa and elsewhere demand serious and immediate attention. As leaders, we must come together across borders to ensure that these hostilities stop.
“We cannot speak of a united Africa while our brothers and sisters are targeted simply for being Nigerian,” he added.

Governor Adeleke also pledged support for initiatives aimed at protecting Nigerians in the diaspora, stressing the need for stronger cooperation among African nations to safeguard the dignity and rights of citizens across the continent.

The keynote lecture at the event was delivered by Eghosa Emmanuel Osaghae, who examined the causes of xenophobia and its effects on African integration and regional peace.

Former Vice President of Liberia, Jewel Howard-Taylor, chaired the occasion, while veteran musician Shina Peters entertained guests with a special performance in honour of the celebrant.

In his remarks, Momodu thanked Governor Adeleke, invited guests, and members of the foundation for celebrating with him and for using the occasion to address issues affecting Africans across the continent.
