Accord Condemns Iwo Violence, Mourns the Deceased

By Waliu Adetokun, Osogbo

The Osun State chapter of the Accord Party has condemned the political violence that recently occurred in Iwo, describing the incident as unfortunate and inconsistent with the party’s commitment to peaceful democratic engagement.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Osun State Chairman of the party, Pastor Victor Babalola Akande, expressed sadness over the incident and extended condolences to the family of Mrs. Taliat Simbiat, whose death has been linked to the violence.

Akande described the development as a tragedy, praying for the repose of the deceased and strength for her family during the difficult period.

“The incident in Iwo is a dark spot that should never have happened. We sympathise with the family of the late Mrs. Taliat Simbiat and pray that God grants them the fortitude to bear this painful loss,” he said.

The Accord chairman maintained that the unfortunate incident was an isolated case and should not be used to judge the conduct of the party and its members across the state.

According to him, the party’s recently concluded primary elections were conducted peacefully in all parts of Osun State, recording a high level of success without major incidents.

“Our primary elections were conducted peacefully across the state with over 99 per cent success. The incident in Iwo does not reflect the peaceful disposition of our party and its members,” Akande stated.

He disclosed that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the violence were ongoing, expressing confidence that the facts of the matter would soon be established.

Akande also dismissed allegations linking the party to thuggery, insisting that Accord remains committed to lawful conduct and peaceful political participation.

“Accord does not harbour thugs. We have consistently promoted peaceful political participation and lawful conduct among our members,” he said.

The party further accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of interference in the matter and rejected criticisms directed at Accord by the opposition party.

“The Osun APC lacks the moral standing to lecture anyone on political conduct.
A party battling internal discontent should confront its own demons and internal dilemmas because the people already know them as agents of doom,” the statement added.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to peace and urged political stakeholders across the state to avoid actions capable of undermining public order and democratic values.
