NAFDAC Flags Off ‘Read the Food Label’ Campaign to Promote Healthier Food Choices

NAFDAC, in collaboration with development partners, has launched the Read the Food Label Campaign, a nationwide initiative aimed at empowering Nigerians to make healthier and safer food choices by developing the habit of reading and understanding food labels before purchasing or consuming pre-packaged foods.
Speaking through a virtual message, our Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, described food labels as more than regulatory requirements, noting that they are powerful public health tools that provide consumers with essential information on ingredients, nutritional composition, allergens, storage conditions, date markings, and manufacturer details.
Prof. Adeyeye iterated that as diet-related non-communicable diseases continue to rise in Nigeria, improving food label literacy has become a public health necessity. She called on Nigerians to make reading food labels a daily habit, reminding consumers, “Before you buy it, read it. Before you eat it, understand it.”
Welcoming participants, the Director of Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (FSAN), Mrs. Eva Edwards, explained that the campaign seeks to build a national culture of reading food labels, adding that it would also serve as a foundation for future work on Front-of-Pack Labelling.
Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of the Executive Director of Resolve to Save Lives (RTSL), Mrs. Nanlop Ogbureke, Ms. Okeoma Obasi praised the initiative as a powerful step in advancing health literacy and promoting healthier food environments in Nigeria.
Other development partners also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the campaign and advancing healthier food environments through sustained collaboration.
