A bill to establish National Eye Centre in Osogbo, the Osun state capital recently passed first reading at the Senate.

The bill which was sponsored by Senator Olubiyi Fadeyi Ajagunnla representing Osun Central Senatorial District is aimed at providing high-quality ophthalmic services and meeting the increasing demand for eye health services across Nigeria.

Osun Spring reports that the proposed National Eye Centre in Osogbo will be the first of its kind in the South Western Nigeria.

Senator Ajagunnla while presenting the bill noted that the facility would tackle the rising cases of preventable blindness while contributing to the nation’s healthcare infrastructure by creating jobs and fostering medical research in ophthalmology.

He added that the National Eye Centre, Osogbo will serve as a training ground for healthcare professionals, increasing the number of qualified personnel specializing in ophthalmology as well as foster research on eye health issues prevalent in the region, contributing to better understanding and treatment options.
