Former Borno State Governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has dismissed as false and malicious a viral publication claiming he accused Vice President Kashim Shettima of creating the Boko Haram insurgent group.
Sheriff, in a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday titled “A Lie Taken Too Far: Shettima, Ali Modu Sheriff Are Not on War Path,” said the report was entirely fabricated and aimed at misleading the public.
He described the story as a dangerous piece of misinformation designed to malign his person and sow disunity within the nation’s political space.
“The publication is a complete fabrication, devoid of truth, and a deliberate attempt to mislead the public, malign my person, and sow discord within the nation’s political landscape,” Sheriff stated.
He clarified that he never granted any interview or made any statement linking Shettima to Boko Haram, stressing that those circulating such claims were acting with malicious intent.
According to him, “I wish to state unequivocally that at no time did I grant any interview or engage with any journalist on the said date or on any matter remotely related to the spurious claims contained in the publication.”
The former governor, who maintained that he has remained committed to peace, unity, and national development, said it was regrettable that some individuals resorted to spreading falsehoods for political gains or public attention.
He urged Nigerians and the media to disregard the report and avoid further circulation of the “concocted story.”
Sheriff added that he had instructed his legal team to identify those responsible for publishing and sharing the defamatory material, vowing to seek redress if the report was not retracted.
“Should the false publication not be taken down forthwith, I will not hesitate to seek full legal redress under the law,” he warned.
