Osun Govt Alerts Residents Over Imminent Flooding, Extreme Weather

By Waliu Adetokun, Osogbo

The Osun State Government has alerted residents to the possibility of heavy rainfall, flooding, windstorms and other extreme weather conditions as the rainy season intensifies across the state.

In a statement issued on Monday in Osogbo, signed by Professor Chinwe Obuaku, the government warned that recent meteorological forecasts and environmental observations indicated that several parts of the state could experience intense rainfall capable of causing flash floods, erosion, destruction of property, traffic disruptions and threats to lives.

Chinwe, advised residents living in flood-prone communities, riverbank areas and low-lying environments to take precautionary measures to avoid disasters.According to the statement, residents should immediately clear blocked drainage channels and waterways around homes, offices, markets and business premises.

The government also warned against dumping refuse in drains, canals and water passages, noting that such practices contribute significantly to flooding during heavy rainfall.Residents were further advised to avoid unnecessary movement during downpours and stay away from flooded roads, bridges and fast-moving water.

The statement added that weak structures, rooftops, signboards, trees and electric poles should be properly secured against strong winds often associated with thunderstorms.“Parents, school authorities, transport operators, traders and community leaders are strongly urged to prioritise safety and ensure full compliance with all environmental and emergency advisories,” the statement said.

It added that relevant government agencies and emergency response teams had been placed on alert across the state to intensify monitoring and response efforts.

While stressing the need for collective responsibility, the government warned that it would not tolerate activities capable of worsening environmental hazards, particularly indiscriminate waste disposal and blockage of drainage systems.

“Residents are therefore advised to treat this warning with utmost seriousness in order to protect lives, families, businesses and communities,” the statement added.
