In a move to revamp, revitalized and improve the sporting sector of the State, the state government under the leadership of Governor Ademola Adeleke is embarking on a transformative journey to revitalize the sports industry in the State.

This was made known recently by the Deputy Governor, who doubles as Commissioner for Sport in the state, Prince Kola Adewusi.

Addressing newsmen on the plans of the government towards this effect, the Deputy Governor said the state has mapped out modalities and action plans to upgrade sporting facilities in the state, restructure the games village in Ijebu-Jesa, create Sport Trust fund for willing investors and sport enthusiastic, setting up sport commission of the state, reintroduction of the prestigious Governor’s Cup, improve reward system for athletes, merit based appointments into different sectoral units of the sport industry of the state, restructuring and rebranding of the state owned football club among others.

He added that it is in the plan of the state government to encourage the physically challenged people to be involved in sports in discovering their god giving talents.

“Osun State Government, led by the visionary and dynamic Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, is embarking on a transformative journey to revitalize the sports industry in the State, shape a prosperous future for our people and elevate sports performance at every level, starting from grassroots initiatives to the elite athletes at the top echelon of sports and improve on our sports facilities.

“We are particularly concerned about the state of the Osogbo Township Stadium, which is supposed to be the flagship of all sports facilities at the State Capital. Improvement on our sports facilities will assist our youths to engage in different kinds of sports by bringing them out of the streets.

“This administration has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to sports development in the past few months. Key investments have been made in various facets of the sports industry, including the successful sponsoring of the State contingent to the last National Sports Festival in Asaba and variously supported the State-owned football clubs (1), Osun United Football Club in their campaign in the nationwide league which earned them promotion to the Nigeria National League and (2) the Osun Babes Football Club which will be completely overhauled”, the Deputy Governor reiterated.

Consequently, in fulfilling some of these action plans, the state government has setup a 9-man committee which includes sport technocrats across board to give further recommendations on how best to achieve most of the plans of the government.

Meanwhile, Osun United Football Club and Osun Babes have now gotten a new management team headed by Mr Akin Maxwell and Mrs Tola Usman as Chairman and Chairperson for the two football outfit of the state respectively.
